All I know about Virginia is ham and tobacco. I suspect there is more than that though.

Have you noticed an uptick in Heath’s receptions in the same time period? I feel like he’s getting more looks for that same reason…other short routes are being doubled, but Heath is still mostly singled.

It’s our own private club, of sorts. A place called The Wiener’s Circle, and it’s in a strip mall just off the Dulles Access Road in Reston, VA. Greg, the proprietor, is a big Steeler fan, and has does up a buffet for every game. Beer and wine also available. We’ll be there this coming Saturday, and we’d love to have you join us.

By the by, Homer has been going through game film and has been having second thoughts about criticizing Ben for going deep so often. Why, everyone asks, is he so greedy when the short pass works so well. And that’s a great question.

The video – and some of the interceptions – show that other teams have carefully studied the Steelers’ multiple receiver short pass patterns and are starting to jump those routes. That can be disastrous, as we saw on the 100-yard pick six (that got called back) against Baltimore, where one defender grabbed AB’s arm just as the ball got there, and the ball caromed into the air. AB was double-teamed on that play, as was D-Will on the brain freeze INT the week before that. And one of Ben’s INT’s against the Browns was the result of a safety’s double team.

A short passing game is more high risk than you might think. And if the D is double-teaming your short guys, Bryant or Wheaton or DHB (he’s the one with the hands) is likely going to have single coverage. Going long is not only an opportunity for a huge gain, it also forces the safety to play back, opening up the short game.

Going long every so often is the price you have to pay to open up the short game. I guess the only issue we have is how often do you have to do it

Though the same route that got Big Ben should be employed again… look for a 3 or 4 year starter who has, by the end of his run, developed the ability to call/change plays at the line. It is ridiculous how rare a skill that is in college anymore.

The next couple of years are going to be increasingly interesting. Hopefully we can find and develop our Aaron Rodgers for when they are over.

And yet they are still alive. They have so many flaws, especially on D. But when they are clicking, they are positively electric. And I also love the bit about the D having to battle two quarterbacks.

Speaking of two quarterbacks, I still wonder if Red Devil will be behind center for the Bungles of Saturday. Or whether it will be his Bamafied understudy, aka The Bama.
