If he draws a double and accomplished “nothing” but Tuitt or someone makes the play, he more than did his job.
None of this shows up in stats, and some people need to be right, so they see what they want.
I’m cautiously optimistic.

Excellent point about coaching staff stability. It has to be a nightmare for the players.

I believe his body type, injuries and the presence of Deebo have played a significant part in his “slow” development as a ROLB. Double digit sacks may or may not come for #95 since Butler has tweaked Lebeau’s 3-4 defense’s pass rush responsibilities. I also believe Jones has a nose for the football and will in time, through hard work, study and continued “high motor” play, develop into a competent starting ROLB. Though he was a first round draft pick at 17, it does not necessarily mean “All-Pro” is a given nor should it be expected. If Joey Porter is satisfied with his progress and in game production, then I am too. I hope the Steelers remain patient with Jarvis.

From a big picture point of view, it doesn’t matter where he was drafted anymore. If a player is a solid contributor and an effective starter, it’s a decent pick. After all, we found a starting LT in the seventh round, his replacement as a free agent, a HOF WR in the sixth round. Our FO makes enough great picks that getting a “just” a solid starter in the first round is not a crime.

So when a player doesn’t live up to what a fan believes he should be, there’s always fall out. Nevermind that the fan expectations might have been wrong…that part doesn’t matter. There are fans, for every team in the league…and probably every sport, who believe that if a player is a first rounder, then he should be a pro-bowl caliber player right off the bat. If you’re starting with such a high bar for a player, you’re almost always going to be disappointed.

I just want each draft to produce solid starters. That tends to keep me balanced.
It will be interesting to see how fans react to Golson next year. They’ll mostly think ‘SEC and 2nd round’ and if that kid isn’t grabbing at least one INT per game, he’ll get the bust label.

I think Jones will continue to be a solid player for the Steelers. I do not care if he ever gets 15 sacks, so long as the TEAM is getting to the quarterback and Jones is taking care of his responsibilities.

So for Jones, he has had to learn new responsibilities several times in the last few years with injuries interrupting the progress. It will be interesting to see his true ceiling as a player. He may well be someone the that develops slowly but constantly over time.

* And here lays the problem for teams that are constantly shuffling their coaching staffs. All the best draft choices in the world cannot over come institutional instability.

As pointed out here, the roles and responsibilities of the OLB have changed with Butler taking over the defense. The days of 12 to 15 sacks a season for the OLBs are over. Anyone judging Jones on sack totals alone are going to be disappointed, and misguided in their judgment as well.
