He got healthy just at the right time, and it’s encouraging to see him able to be an immediate contributor. It’s not really surprising, but we Steelers fans are so unaccustomed to quality free agents that when a guy like D. Williams or Green comes in and picks up where they left off, we’re all “Wow! this guy doesn’t have a rookie learning curve!”

In fact, this was actually perhaps the best game of Green’s career. It could be an anomaly, but it also could be that we got an underused player poised to breakout just like we hoped. It will be interesting to see how good Green can be as defenses increasingly key in on him. I’m not going to even hope that he’ll contend with Gronk or put up numbers like Jimmy Graham in New Orleans; I think he goes down too easily, and doesn’t seem to have the foot quickness and shiftiness to be truly uncoverable. He’s big and fast, though, he’s got a top QB throwing to him, and defenses can’t focus on him too much with Brown and Bell on the field as well. It’s tough to think of anyone to compare him to, but Julius Thomas in his Denver days might fit best, perhaps not the incredible all around player you can rely on as the primary target in your passing game like Gronk or Olsen, but a legitimate playmaker.

Homer’s dog Katie sniffed and mentioned that he even has that new player smell. That’s a good thing, especially this late in the season, when most of the guys are pretty beat up and smell kinda funky. At least that’s Katie’s take on it.

The light seems to have come on for Burns and Davis. There was never a question about their speed or athleticism. Earlier in the season, they were often half a step late to the party. Now, as they’ve gained experience and studied the game films, the game seems to have slowed down for these two rookies and they are arriving on time. The front three and the blitzers put constant pressure on Manning, and he never had enough time to get into a rhythm with his receivers.

Another week, another couple more goal line stands. These guys have been terrific in the red zone lately.

I read somewhere once that “defense wins championships.”

The E-Z Pass Defense ™ is clearly a thing of the past, and the Steeler secondary is becoming better and better every week.
The number of rookies (Burns, Davis, Hargrave) and second year guys (Dupree, Chickillo) makes it even more exciting to watch the development of this unit.
