Like many here, I “met” him at BTSC, back in the good old days.

I got to know him a bit better here at Going Deep. I did some writing here, though I wouldn’t call myself a fellow contributor. Ivan was a master. He said many of the things we were thinking, but then examined those thoughts and issues deeply and thoughtfully.

His articles always laid open the human dimension of sport and of fandom. Many times, he drove me to examine my attitudes and opinions on race, substance abuse and football’s violent side.

I plan to celebrate Ivan by rereading some of his articles here. Most of all, I’ll miss his wisdom and grace.
