Mason appears to be the kind of player/leader the Steelers were looking for to succeed BB. I will be rooting for him to flourish with the Black & Gold, when his number is called!

The vast majority of people, who post on this site and all the ones who write for it, know so much more about football than myself but that isn’t the reason I haven’t picked a favourite yet. I really haven’t paid nearly as much attention to the new players this season as I have in the past. I am just not connecting the same way as in past years. I don’t know if that is because I was distracted by the Winnipeg Jets playoff run or if I am just not as interested this season.

I also have not seen much in the way of training camp coverage by the folks I depend on to be my eyes and ears (I what I know has all been filtered through them) at training camp.

It certainly doesn’t seem as if those around him are giving him very good advice. There is this, though—supposed last summer, when the Steelers offered him quite a good contract, his agent advised him to take it, and he refused. So the question becomes whether he lacks a good support system, or whether he lacks the humility to listen to those who have his best interests at heart.

Comment on The Journey to Seven Lombardis: Part 1 by hombredeacero https://goingdeepsteelers.org/2018/05/30/the-journey-to-seven-lombardis-part-1/#comment-7930 Fri, 01 Jun 2018 19:08:33 +0000 http://goingdeepsteelers.org/?p=23121#comment-7930 Wow. Labriola let you wear his ring? That’s pretty awesome.

Good summary of where things stand at this stage. The injury issue is an interesting one. A few years back, I published something on BTSC taking a closer look at injuries. I dug up a very old quote by Ed Bouchette from the spring of 2008 on Chet Furman’s departure, whom Mike Tomlin replaced with Garrett G.

In the article, Bouchette mentioned that during Furman’s tenure with the Steelers, the Steelers actually suffered the fewest starter games lost to injury than any other NFL team. HE didn’t cite the stat, and that information is VERY hard to find.

But Fruman was with the Steelers for over 15 years, and that gives you a solid data sample to work with, because if you’ll remember, Cowher’s Steelers had their own injury issues (remember losing Woodson and O’Donnell on opening day 1995?)

Anyway, injuries haven’t been as bad over the last couple of three years, although they have come at inopportune times (Brown and Shazier this year, Bell last year in the AFC Championship not to mention being forced to start essentially 4th, 5th and 6th WR’s in that game.)

Wasn’t surprised in the least when Bryant was traded.

I wonder if there is a record for the number of divas on a successful NFL offence. Will there be too much drama? I guess all we can do is stay tuned to find out.

The issue of officiating (and this seems to be a major issue in all professional sports) is one of the most worrying to me. Football can survive a cheerleader scandal but the CTE issue, the mishandling of the anthem protest issue and the issue with officiating all, to me at least, seem to have enough gravitas to seriously injury the league. Collectively they may be enough to sink it (again just my perception).

Too soon for the Redman trophy I would think, CSW is guaranteed a spot but there are still many young men who are fighting for their jobs right now. I think I will wait till they have at least a couple of pre-season games under their belts before I cast my vote.

I say this because both Antonio Brown and Ben Roethlisberger, just to cite two examples, have some serious diva issues, yet compared to Bell both end up looking like Winston Churchill. I am assuming that someone in their lives is helping them to see the bigger picture. It would appear that there is no one smart enough or influential enough in Bell’s camp to play that role.

And speaking of dysfunction. The same can be said of the NFL owners, particularly as it relates to this issue of cheerleaders. A reckoning is coming. Dan Rooney would have known that, but he’s not around. This, along with the Anthem mess and, frankly, just about everything they touch these days could get real ugly, real fast.

Might as well give the Redman Trophy for camp darling to Scotland-Williamson now and avoid the rush (and spare you some nerve pain).

Even football in shorts has its perils.
